چکیده

objectives: the aim of this study was to assess the effect of tube current, kilovoltage peak (kvp), metal type, and the position of metal objects on metal artifacts in cone-beam computed tomography (cbct) images. materials and methods: titanium and cobalt-chromium rods were fabricated and placed in a dry human mandible. samples were scanned using a promax 3d cbct unit with different milli-amperages and kvp. the artifacts induced by metal objects were evaluated using the image j software in four regions of interest (rois) on each image. results: a higher kvp decreased artifacts of the buccal surface of the rods in 97% of the cases (p=0.046) but did not affect the severity of artifacts between the two metal objects (p>0.05). increasing the tube current had no effect on metal artifacts in 93% of the cases (p>0.05). artifacts induced by a cobalt-chromium alloy were more severe than those with titanium (p<0.001). artifacts were more intense in the buccal surface of anterior rods compared to the posterior rods (p<0.003). conclusions: tube voltage, metal type and the position of metal objects affected the severity of metal artifacts on cbct images. the metal type had the greatest effect on metal artifact intensity in this study. keywords: artifacts; cone-beam computed tomography; metals

Artifacts of Titanium, Zirconium, and Binary Titanium-Zirconium Abutments in Compute Tomography, Cone Beam Computed Tomography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate imaging artifacts induced by Titanium, Zirconium, Titanium-Zirconium abutments in CT, MRI and CBCT imaging modalities. Methods: A 4×8mm titanium fixture was inserted in a dry human mandible. Titanium, Zirconium and Titanium–Zirconium abutments measuring 10.5 mm in height are located on the fixture, one by one. Each abutment was scan...

Evaluation of Metal Artifacts in Cone Beam Computed Tomography by Metal Supported Porcelain Crowns Using Different FOV and Localizations: An In Vitro Study

Introduction: Metal-supported porcelain crowns (MSPC) and bridge restorations may be present in the mouths of patients undergoing CBCT imaging. Artifacts that are caused by these MSPCs may adversely affect image quality. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of different FOV (field of view) and localization in FOV on metal artifacts caused by MSPC. Methods:</...

Prevalence of Idiopathic Osteosclerosis on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images

Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of idiopathic osteosclerosis on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of patients. Methods: In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, 240 CBCT scans of patients (125 women, 115 men) referred to a private oral and maxillofacial radiology clinic in Tehran in 2013 were selected and evaluated. Presence of idiopathic osteosc...

effect of metal artifacts on detection of vertical root fractures using two cone beam computed tomography systems

introduction: vertical root fracture (vrf) is common in endodontically treated teeth. conventional and digital radiographies have limitations for detection of vrfs. cone-beam computed tomography (cbct) offers greater detection accuracy of vrfs in comparison with conventional radiography. this study compared the effects of metal artifacts on detection of vrfs by using two cbct systems. methods a...

Assessment of metal artifacts in three-dimensional dental surface models derived by cone-beam computed tomography

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess artifacts induced by metallic restorations in three-dimensional (3D) dental surface models derived by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS Fifteen specimens, each with four extracted human premolars and molars embedded in a plaster block, were scanned by CBCT before and after the cavitated second premolars were restored with dental amalga...
